Goalkeeping problems at Arsenal

Posted on February 20, 2010 by in Arsenal, English Premier League

No surprise to see that Arsene Wenger is holding the referee responsible for Lukasz Fabianski’s errors, which culminated in Arsenal’s defeat to Porto recently. The blame will no doubt end up be laid upon the Polish goalkeepers shoulders.

It is hard to follow some of the goal keeping greats that stood before Fabianski. The search for a reliable first choice goalkeeper continues. Something that has evaded Arsenal since the departure of David Seaman. Similar to what happened at Manchester United after Peter Schmeichel left. Big shoes to fill, well, in front of goal mouth rather than commentating.

Man U have now found Edwin Van Der Sar……….but the search continues at Arsenal.

No doubt some readers are thinking, ‘what about Lehmann’. He was part of the team that won the Premier League in unbeaten in the first season. As with some players who show brilliance he went from sublime (Arsenal had a clean sheet record in the 2005 – 2006 Champions League season) to stupid (when he was sent of same season’s final)

Manuel Almunia replaced Lehman’s in 2008. The Spaniard also provded to be inconsistent loseing the starting place to Fabianski and Vito Mannone. Perhaps the search for the solution should be taken closer to home. To develop and nurture home grown talent rather than relying on European players.

With any of the best goalkeepers it take time to get used to the big games. An ability to cope with the pressure must be semething that needs to be developed. A consistent threat of being replaced by someone else can’t help

However, it is fair to say that Almunia and Mannone have more of a future at the club than Fabianski. His blunders last night, added to those in last season’s FA Cup semi-final, would appear to suggest that he is not cut out for the big games (or not yet at least). Wenger is a tolerant manager, but Fabianski may have stretched his patience too far on this occasion.

Lets see if Wenger will losen the purse strings to provide an established goalkeeper to plug the big hole in defence.
